Kevin Murphy, an Associate in the Corporate Group, has had a wide variety of legal experiences over the past decade and currently concentrates his practice in the areas of corporate and real estate law.
Prior to joining Adler Pollock & Sheehan, Mr. Murphy obtained a Legal Fellowship in Washington, D.C. for U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and also served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Maureen McKenna Goldberg, Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. After his clerkship, Mr. Murphy worked in the Boston office of Old Republic National Title Insurance Company as Title Counsel engaged in title review and claims management issues. Mr. Murphy then joined Home Loan Investment Bank, FSB as Vice President and General Counsel, guiding the bank through a vast array of legal issues, ranging from complex class action litigation and settlement negotiations to trademark disputes and regulatory compliance.
Prior to his legal career, Mr. Murphy enjoyed a successful career in advertising and corporate communications for the global communications conglomerate Young & Rubicam Advertising on Madison Avenue.
Significant Matters
- Mr. Murphy mandated and directed the unification of seven nationwide class action lawsuits into the Multi-District Litigation Panel and represented Home Loan Investment Bank, FSB (“HLIB”) to obtain $4 Million in insurance coverage to protect HLIB from further losses. Mr. Murphy effectively negotiated a multi-million dollar settlement on behalf of HLIB over the course of several months.
- Mr. Murphy negotiated all contractual arrangements with HLIB’s third party vendors and also established and monitored all of HLIB’s trademarks, servicemarks and copyrighted materials.
- Over his tenure at HLIB, Mr. Murphy strategically reorganized the bank’s entire corporate structure as part of a tactical estate planning project.
- Mr. Murphy instituted a bank-wide compliance program, which monitored a compendium on ongoing compliance matters and required comprehensive internal audit reviews to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Mr. Murphy spearheaded a 60,000 S.F. high-profile commercial real estate development project, which included the selection of the construction management company, the architect and the engineer, and also negotiated the various AIA form contracts for the same. In his capacity as project director, Mr. Murphy routinely appeared before zoning and planning boards to propose and appeal variances and also worked with the R.I. Department of Environmental Management to uncover and resolve any environmental issues.
