Avital Chatto participates in the labor and employment group’s varied practice, assisting on matters involving employment discrimination, union contract negotiation and administration, employee relations, and compliance with state and federal regulations.
Ms. Chatto has advised clients with regard to medical leave, wage-hour laws, termination, workplace policies regarding computer use, and other day-to-day personnel issues. She has lectured on disability law and computer use policies.
Prior to becoming associated with Adler Pollock & Sheehan, Ms. Chatto served as a law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Honorable Mary M. Lisi and the Honorable Ronald R. Lagueux. As part of her work at federal court, Ms. Chatto drafted opinions in cases concerning ERISA, collective bargaining agreements, insurance contracts, securities fraud, anti-trust violations, employment discrimination, and municipal contracts. While in law school, Ms. Chatto worked in a legal clinic handling wage/hour claims, and other employment issues.
Significant Matters
- Recently worked on First Circuit appeal of District Court decision regarding federal preemption of local ordinance requiring worker retention in hospitality industry.
- Successfully represented several employers in administrative appeals of unemployment benefits decisions.
- Worked on defense of sexual harassment and race discrimination claims before the R.I. Commission of Human Rights.
- Assisted in the defense against an unfair labor practice charge before the NLRB.
- Worked on labor arbitrations involving employer prerogative to transfer jobs, employee discipline, and termination for off-duty conduct.
