Areas of Concentration

  • Development
  • Permitting
  • Regulatory issues
  • Mergers & acquisitions

From permitting, development, corporate and transactional work to government relations, regulatory law, zoning, environmental issues and litigation, our Energy and Telecommunications Law Group gives its blue-chip clients a deeply experienced, one-stop shop for comprehensive legal service.

We successfully handle state licensing for new utility siting—including a $500 million Florida Power & Light Rhode Island power generation facility.  We smooth transactions and acquisitions—such as the merger of Verizon New England and Fairpoint Communications.  We help utilities win increased revenues from regulators—like the City of Woonsocket’s million-dollar water-utility rate case before the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission.

For traditional and renewable energy generation, transmission, gas, telecommunications, cable and water companies, we provide knowledgeable full-service law that helps them grow, prosper and respond proactively to new technological, regulatory and market realities.  We know the players, the issues and the playing field, and work with both national and local clients in crafting winning strategies in this complex, ever-changing and highly regulated environment.

Representative Matters

  • We saved our client, Mid Maine Communications, significant costs by using our specialized industry knowledge to forge an innovative offer and win Maine Public Utility Commission approval, with special conditions benefiting our clients, for the multimillion-dollar merger of Verizon New England and Fairpoint Communications.
  • For client Florida Power & Light, we provided comprehensive energy, government relations, environmental and public utility know-how to effectively and efficiently win approval and permitting from the Rhode Island Energy Facility Siting Board for a new, $500 million power generation facility.
  • We applied our extensive rate-case experience to arrange an innovative settlement for the City of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Water Division, winning approval from the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission for a $1 million revenue increase from ratepayers to help fund expansion and replacement of a water treatment facility.
