Litigation Paralegal – Providence

Adler Pollock & Sheehan (AP&S) is currently seeking a litigation paralegal for our Providence office.  AP&S is a New England law firm representing local, national, and international clients in a wide range of complex legal matters.  Since 1960, we have been committed to providing clients with the highest levels of legal services through a wide variety of practice areas in our three office locations: Providence and Newport, RI, and Boston, MA.

Among the largest and most experienced in New England, our Litigation Department is recognized nationally for its high-quality work.   Litigation paralegals assist attorneys across practice areas on a wide variety of litigation.  They collaborate with attorneys to help manage the litigation process from inception through trial, leveraging their knowledge to streamline the execution of litigation tasks and create efficiencies.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct legal research and analyze caselaw.
  • Conduct background research on parties and witnesses via public records searches, social media, and the internet, and report on same.
  • Monitor case filings and provide detailed assessments to attorneys.
  • Initial drafting of answers, discovery requests and responses, pre-trial motions, dispositive motions, and other pleadings.
  • Review, evaluate and summarize discovery documents including medical records, employment records, and other case material.
  • Draft subpoenas and monitor for compliance. Review and summarize documents received.
  • Compile motion packages for filing with the court.
  • Perform cite checking and proofreading of briefs and other legal documents.
  • Manage document production (hard and electronic documents.
  • Collect material from clients, opposing parties, and third parties (hard copies, electronic data, physical evidence).
  • Assist at all phases of litigation including motion practice, discovery, arbitration, trial, and appeal.
  • Serve as liaison with clients including frequent personal interaction.
  • Research prior testimony and publications of opposing experts.
  • Research rules of procedure for relevant court venues throughout New England and assure adherence thereto.
  • Select, collate, and prepare binders of key documents during key litigation phases including depositions, mediation, arbitration, and trial.
  • Administratively manage all phases of a litigation case.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented and highly focused.
  • Capable of handling multiple responsibilities.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel is required.
  • 1-3 years litigation paralegal experience preferred.  Will provide training if candidates possess other qualities we consider highly desirable.

Intellectual Property Assistant

Adler Pollock & Sheehan P.C., a full-service law firm, is seeking an Intellectual Property Assistant for our Providence, Rhode Island office. This position will be part of our Intellectual Property Group providing utmost customer service to both domestic and international clients. Under the supervision of the Intellectual Property attorneys and paralegals, the Intellectual Property Assistant will provide support for all types of Intellectual Property related activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with patent and trademark prosecution filing applications, responses, IDSs, transmittal documents, etc.; collaborate with attorneys and paralegals as needed.
  • Assist in drafting report letters and reminders to clients regarding the status of applications and patents.
  • Review and manage files.
  • Electronic filing with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Act as a point of contact for the clients, ensuring accuracy and completeness of information.
  • Assist with client invoice review, edits, and finalization.
  • Provide back-up support to team and project assistance as needed.
  • Other tasks as assigned including billing portions of your time.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other software including timekeeping software, Adobe Acrobat, Visio.
  • Excellent client service skills:
    • Possess effective written and oral communication skills.
    • Display a strong client service orientation with a positive attitude.
    • Strong sense of accountability, taking ownership over projects and responsibilities and resolving issues proactively.
    • Ability to assess information, anticipate issues and outcomes, and make effective decisions.
  • Excellent organizational skills:
    • Must be a good planner and detail oriented.
    • Ability to manage a high-volume of work in fast-paced environment and work well under pressure.
    • Ability to meet deadlines, organize and prioritize assignments, and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Ability to work independently and take initiative to move projects to completion
  • Minimum of five years of experience working in a law firm or in-house legal environment in a legal assistant role or similar.
  • Respectful, reliable, and dependable team player; ability to work productively with firm personnel at all levels and with minimal supervision.
  • Must be flexible with work hours and overtime as needed.

Preferred Experience:

  • Two-year degree or equivalent law firm experience
  • Paralegal certificate from ABA approved program
  • Familiarity with iManage and FoundationIP a plus
